Barack Obama says: "Americans aren't stupid. " I hope that he's right, but on John Stewart's Daily Show a piece was done on my town of Wasilla, Alaska, and it was not flattering. The Daily Show has no mission to give us "real" news, yet the piece was still revealing. Watching it, I came to the conclusion that Obama may be wrong: Americans, and Alaskans in particular, may own a collective stupidity, of sorts. I may even be part of that collective. But the good news is that I know a lot of people here in Alaska who are smart, progressive and involved.
Oh, Alaska will go for old "Top Gun" McCain and Sarah (wink) Palin on November 4, and more's the pity. But Alaska hasn't voted for a Democrat for president since 1964, and may not do so again any time soon. But we could - some day.
U-Tube has the SNL version of the Veep Debate and if it wasn't so funny, it'd be spooky, because it was so real....

Americans aren't really stupid, but they remain ignorant, often by choice. It's so much easier to pay attention to "Dancing With the stars" or "American Idol" than it is to keep up on real events.
The scary side of this ignorance has been coming out the past few days at the McCain/Palin rallies with the passions of the ignorant crowds being stirred up. I fear that soon a rally will include torches and pitchforks in the crowd and will end with a lynching, or at least storming the local library for an old-fashioned book burning.
For a time I thought that with the National Guard deployed throughout the world, any domestic uprising would be quelled by Blackwater USA. I've changed my mind. They'll just pass out "Get Out of Jail Free" cards at GOP rallies and turn loose the ignorant supporters on the rest of us.
Much as I thought I liked living in the USSA, I've really been thinking of finding another place to live. Anyone know of any Democracies left in the world?
